Pál Deim (1932-2016) was a prominent figure of the Hungarian neo-avant-garde art emerging in the 1960s. His retrospective exhibition organized in collaboration between the Ferenczy Museum Centre and the Judit Virág Gallery presents a new perspective on his diverse oeuvre. Pál Deim’s visual language is based on a few characteristic motifs, the elusiveness and positioning of which contribute to meaning making, adding further layers to each of his creative periods. His distinctively anthropocentric art of geometric abstraction is a fusion of the Western European modernist painting tradition with Szentendre’s and Eastern Orthodox motifs. The spiritual silence of his early works is closely linked to a profound exploration of the notion of space, which would continue to prevail in his later work. Silence is an elementary organizing principle of his synthesizing attitude, and the exhibition explores his career spanning nearly six decades in the light of this concept. The interplay of paintings, sculptures, public works and memorials attest to the diversity of his oeuvre so consistently constructed based on a strict internal logic.
