12th Post-War and Contemporary Art Sale Part I.

12th Post-War and Contemporary Art Sale Part I.

Virág Judit Gallery launches this year’s auction season with Surrealist works and a real speciality, a surprise piece by Simon Hantaï – a rare find at domestic auctions. The 12th Post-War and Contemporary Sale includes outstanding masterpieces by János Fajó, Lajos Kassák and László Lakner, among others.

The emergence of a Simon Hantaï work – by one of the most famous Hungarian abstract painters – is a real novelty on the Hungarian art market. The huge international interest towards the artist’s oeuvre is illustrated by the fact that one of his paintings was sold for €4 million, more than HUF 1.4 billion at Sotheby’s Paris in 2016. Hantaï settled in Paris in 1948 and never returned to Hungary. He created a unique world through his modern works using untraditional tools such as blades, cloths and sponges.

János Fajó’s joyful, pulsating work Sponge cakes III. is one of the first paintings to use the iconic sponge cake figure. The large scale, museum-quality piece starts from HUF 10 million.

Composition No.3. by Lajos Kassák was painted in 1960 and was exhibited in a renowned Parisian gallery.

László Lakner’s Surrealist pieces are rarely found on the domestic art market. Starting at HUF 7.5 million Still Life is a real rarity for art collectors.
