Strange World – The art of Dezső Mokry-Mészáros

2017-05-25

Between May 25th and June 24th, the Virág Judit Gallery will hold a non-profit exhibition on the yet-unprocessed oeuvre of Dezső Mokry-Mészáros titled Strange world. The exhibition displays 90 pieces of art with the aim of providing a comprehensive insight into the oeuvre of this artist unique in Hungarian art history.  At the beginning of his career, the well-travelled, extremely well educated but self-taught artist created his art depicting far away planets based on pictures he could observe in his microscope. Later he showed a keen interest in prehistoric times.  Even as a child he was a nature enthusiast; he learnt the preparation of animals and he had an extensive insect and butterfly collection. Furthermore, he was a prolific traveller; he worked in Napoli and on the island of Capri, and later travelled around North-Africa and Oceania, and thus gathered plenty of inspiration for his art. In addition to his paintings, the exhibition displays some of the unique small sculptures he created from self-produced materials, his drawings and sketches that demonstrate a deep knowledge of ornaments, as well as ceramics from his late period. We can gain an insight into the extremely complex period from styles, trends and art history impacts point of view, namely his artistic milieu, the works of some of the defining artists of his time and into the reception of his oeuvre. The exhibition presents the most beautiful pieces of the oeuvre through his works now kept in three public collections and several private collections and galleries.
